Wrestling Biography

The WWE superstar “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, born in December of 1964, began his professional wresting career in 1990.  He was originally trained by Chris Adams, and during his wrestling career, he has won a number of titles, including the WCW US, Television, and Tag titles, the WWE Championship (six times), the Intercontinental title (twice), and the World Tag title (four times).  Austin is also one of the most famous WWE stars; even those who aren’t wrestling fans have heard of him.

After a short year as an independent wrestler, in 1991, Austin joined WCW. During this time, Austin won the Tage Team championship on two different occasions with two different partners. In addition, he obtianed the World TV title and the United States championship. However, after three successful years with the WCW, Austin was fired via a phone call after he injured his arm.  In late 1995, Austin joined ECW.  He used ECW as a way to improve his character and talk about his firing from WCW. While in ECW he often competed for the ECW Chanpionship on several occasions. Six months later, the WWE hired him.

His beginnning with the WWE was in late 1995 as "The Ringmaster" with Ted DiBiase. After losing a Strap match to Savio Vega, DiBiase was no longer allowed to be Austin's manager. In 1996, Austin won the King of the Ring event.  It was then that he first uttered his now famous “Austin 3:16” line.  This line quickly became very popular, appearing on t-shirts and posters.  In fact, one of the Austin 3:16 shirts is the best selling t-shirt in wrestling history.  This was also one of the first times that a heel character became a fan favorite.

After the King of the Ring, a feud started between Austin and Bret Hart that would last for over a year. These two were in matches frequently with their Wrestlemania 13 Submission match between them making Austin a fan favorite and Hart a heel in a rarely seen "double-turn". During the feud with Hart, Austin won the WWE Tag Team championship on two occasions, once with Shawn Michaels and the other with Dude Love.

The next year, Austin began to feud with the wrestlers of the Hart Foundation.  Austin and Owen Hart also feuded, with Owen suffering a severe injury during one of their matches.  WrestleMania 14 saw Austin win his first WWE title.  During this time, he began a rivalry with Vince McMahon.

This particular storyline is credited with pushing the WWE past WCW in the Monday Night Wars. Every week, Mr. McMahon would try to get Austin and Austin was always one step ahead of the Corporation. During this time, Austin won and lost the WWE title three times, most of them by crook as McMahon had some type of bearing on the outcome. The summit of the feud was steel cage match at St. Valentine's Day Massacre, where Austin won and featured the debut of the Big Show who threw Austin through the cage for the victory.

Austin’s next rivalry was with the Rock.  The Austin/Rock matches were the highlights of two WrestleMania events.  However, in 1999, Austin underwent neck surgery, and he was out for much of 2000.  During his time off, other wrestlers became more prominent. He was a prominent player in the Invasion angle where he jumped ship to join the Alliance group (WCW/ECW).  During this time Austin held the WWE Championship but lost it to Kurt Angle but regained it back not long after. After the angle was over, Austin began a feud with the newly rejoined NWO with Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, and Kevin Nash. After beating Hall at Wrestlemania 18, problems arose due to storylines that were created and Austin left the the WWE.

Austin reappeared in 2003 in a street fight against his former boss from WCW Eric Bischoff. Following that, he had one more match against The Rock at Wrestlemania 19 where he lost. He has not made many in-ring appearances since then, preferring to act more as a personality and make special appearances. In 2009, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Vince McMahon who called him the greatest superstar in WWE history.
