Smith actually began wrestling when he was eight. His father, Davey Boy Smith, trained him, and he made a WWF appearance when he was ten in a house show. At 15, he made his first professional debut with the Rockyford Rodeo, and he quickly made a name for himself. In 2004, Smith and fellow wrestler T.J. Wilson formed the tag team Stampede Bulldogs, a takeoff of the British Bulldogs team that he father was a part of. He also created the Hart Foundation Version 2.0, a stable composed of Smith, Wilson, Teddy Hart, and Jack Evens. The stable performed as part of Stampede Wrestling before moving to the

In 2006, Smith was present when his uncle Bret Hart was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. There, he met several WWE executives and signed a developmental contract. Smith trained mostly with Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). There, he won the first-ever Florida Championship Wrestling Southern Heavyweight Championship after defeating 20 opponents.
In 2007, Smith appeared on RAW and defeated Carlito in his first match. He stayed with RAW for a year, and then was moved to Smackdown. However, Smith felt like he needed more development, and he has returned to FCW to mature as a wrestler.
After a few false starts, Smith joined ECW in April 2009 to join his cousin Nattie (Natalya) Niedhart and close friend TJ (Tyson Kidd) Wilson to form the Hart Dynasty, a take off on the old Hart Foundation which featured Natalya's father Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart and Smith's father The British Bulldog. They are all currently on Smackdown.
