Wrestling Biography
WWE superstar Matt Hardy is the older brother of Jeff Hardy, and the two wrestled together as the Hardy Boyz tag team for much of their WWE careers. Hardy was born in September of 1974 in North Carolina, and it was in North Carolina that he and his brother started their own wrestling promotion. This promotion, called OMEGA, featured a number of WWE wrestlers.
In 1994, Matt Hardy made his WWE debut with his brother as a jobber. They appeared off and on to lose to superstars until 1999. After hiring Michael Hayes as their manager, they won their first tag title. After losing the titles, they joined The New Brood and they later won the first ever Tag Team Ladder match for the services ofTerri Runnels as their manager, but they left her for Lita in 2000. The three formed Team Extreme and became very popular.
In fact, the Hardy Boyz are credited with revitalizing tag team wrestling thanks to their feud with the Dudley Boyz and Edge and Christian. The three traded the tag titles back and forth in some of the biggest matches of all time.
In 2001, Matt and Jeff briefly feuded and began doing more singles wrestling. Both picked up a number of titles, but Jeff eventually left the WWE in 2003. Matt continued on, but he later became involved in a real-life love triangle when he discovered his real-life girlfriend Lita was having an affair with Edge. Matt was fired from the WWE for talking about the affair on his website. However, fan support helped Matt get rehired in 2005.
When Jeff returned to the WWE in 2006, the two formed the Hardy Boyz once again. They feuded with MNM as a tag team while continuing to pursue singles titles. The won the Tag Team titles for the eighth time in 2007 but lost the titles to Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch.
The Hardys went their seperate ways and Matt became embroiled in a feud with MVP over his United States championship. During this feud, they became the WWE Tage Team champions but lost them not to long after. At the height of this rivalry, Matt busted his appendix and was out until Wrestlemania 24 costing MVP the Money in the Bank match. Hardy went on to win the US Title from MVP and brought the title over to ECW where he was drafted to. After a three month reign, he lost the title to Shelton Benjamin.
In 2008, Matt picked up the ECW Championship while he brother won the WWE title. He went to hold the championship for three month reign, he lost the title to Jack Swagger. However, in the beginning of 2009, Jeff was the target of some mysterious attacks, and in early 2009, fans learned that it was his brother Matt who was behind them. Matt’s attacks eventually led to Jeff losing the WWE title. This resulted in a series of matches between the brothers cumlinating in a I Quit Match at Backlash which Jeff won.
After another injury, Matt returned to Smackdown where his differences with Jeff was settlled and Matt became a fan favorite once again.
