Alvin Burke

Wrestling Biography

The WWE superstar who goes by Montel Vontavious Porter, or MVP, was born as Alvin Burke, Jr., in 1973.  He currently wrestles on WWE’s RAW.  Porter has held a number of titles, including the WWE tag championship with Matt Hardy and the WWE United States championship.  In fact, Porter holds the record for holding the US title since the WWE acquired it.

At sixteen, Porter was arrested and sentenced to 18 and a half years in prison for kidnapping and armed robbery.  Halfway through that sentence, he began his career as a professional wrestler with help from one of his guards (who wrestled on the independent circuit).  In 2002, he began wrestling as Antonio Banks and made appearances at TNA Wrestling and Full Impact Pro.

Porter was given a WWE developmental contract in 2005, and he began training with Deep South Wrestling.  There, he developed his character of MVP, which was partially based on the fictional character played by Cuba Gooding, Jr. in the movie Jerry Maguire.  As MVP, Porter had his first Smackdown appearance on August 4, 2006.  He was described as a free agent and appeared talking to Smackdown’s manager in a number of behind the scenes videos.  He was then “signed” to Smackdown in September.

He had his first in-ring appearance at the No Mercy event in October and then began appearing regularly on Smackdown.  He first feuded with Kane.  Following that, he and Chris Benoit, holder of the US Champion title, began a rivalry.  MVP eventually defeated Benoit and claimed the title.  While MVP and Matt Hardy battled it out over his title, the two would be thrown together into a tag team match after MVP stated that he and whoever entered the room next could win the Tag Team title.  The next week, MVP proved he was correct when he and Hardy claimed the title from Deuce ‘n Domino.  Their partnership was short-lived, however, and they soon lost the title. Matt Hardy ended up winning the US Title from MVP but not after he held the belt for 343 days.

In August 2008, MVP embarked on a five monthe losing streak which ended against the Big Show in a Last Man Standing (with assistance from Triple H). He went onto win the US Title for the second time from Shelton Benjamin. In April 2009, he was drafted to RAW and lost the US title to Kofi Kingston. Since then, he has started a Tag Team with Mark Henry and thy have challenged for the Unified Tag Team belts but as been unsucessful.
