Steven Haworth

Wrestling Biography

Steven Haworth is better known as Nigel McGuiness in pro wrestling cirlces. This product of London started his career in Heartland Wrestling Association training under Les Thatcher and also wrestled in the midwest for a year. After going back to England to work, he returned to HWA with a punk rock soccer hooligan persona. He wrestled a singles match and won the HWA Tag Team Championship and joined up with The Human Time Bomb. This started a feud with the Jablonski Brothers where both won and lost the Tag Team titles to each other once with McGuinness winning the final encounter. He was the first HWA European Champion and retired when he won it back after losing it. He also won the HWA Heavyweight Championship on two occasions.

McGuiness debuted in Ring of Honor in 2003 and had limited success throughout 2004. In 2005, he challenged for the ROH Tag Team titles with Colt Cabana but came up short. Cabana and McGuinness began fighting each other for a shot at the ROH Pure Championship which McGuinness won, beating Samoa Joe in August 2005.  He held the title for 350 days, the longest reign of the Pure title in the two year history of the title. Claudo Castagnoli was the biggest adversary for McGuinness during his title reign, with Claudio almost beating him a few times but McGuinness using underhanded tactics to win. Nigel and Bryan Danielson competed for the ROH World Title with the climax being a unification match with the winner holding both titles. Danielson won and  McGuinness was out as the Pure Champion title no longer existed.

In October 2007, McGuinness won the ROH World Title, beating Takeshi Morishima but tore his biceps. ROH did not strip him of the ROH Title. McGuinness came back from injury but was hurt again, sustaining an arm injury.  He continued to wrestle and held the ROH title for 545 days before losing it to Jerry Lynn in April 2009. During this time, he was wrestling overseas and making a name for himself in his home of England and in Japan.

On September 4, 2009, it was announced that Nigel was leaving ROH to take a deal with the WWE. McGuinness had his last match against Bryan Danielson, who was also leaving the WWE. It was later reported that McGuinness had failed a pre-screening physical test and he decided to sign with TNA Wrestling. He made his first appearance  in October 2009 by attacking Kurt Angle. He defeated Angle in a street fight the following week and faced Angle in two more maches over a two-month period, including a Three Degrees of Pain match where Angle won.
